Toba Aquarium

It is a vast aquarium with a total length of about 240m and a passage length of about 1.5km. It is one of the largest indoor aquariums in Japan. About 30,000 animals of about 1,200 species are bred here, and this aquarium was the first in the world to successfully breed snapping turtles in a captive environment.

It is a small island in Toba Bay, Toba City, where Kokichi Mikimoto succeeded in culturing pearls for the first time in the world in 1893. The entire island is a leisure facility operated by Mikimoto Pearl Island Co., Ltd.

The Pearl Museum has an extensive collection of antique jewelry made with natural pearls, as well as gorgeous arts and crafts made with cultured pearls. And you can learn about pearl-forming mechanism.

Meotoiwa Rocks

Meotoiwa Rocks

The Meotoiwa Rocks in Futamiura are two rocks, a male rock and a female rock, that are firmly tied together by a thick sacred straw rope. It is considered a symbol of love, for married and unmarried couples. Originally, it served as a torii gate for worshiping the god of the sun and Okitama Jinseki, which is enshrined offshore.

Every year on May 5th, September 5th, and weekends in mid-December, the Oshimenawahari Shinji ritual is held, attracting many visitors.

From May to July, you can see the sun rise between the two rocks, and on sunny days around the summer solstice, you can see the sun rise behind Mt. Fuji in the distance.

It is also recommended to visit this spot when visiting Ise Jingu Shrine or sightseeing Toba and Shima.

Ise Jingu Shrine

Ise Jingu is a shrine consisting of 125 shrines of various sizes scattered throughout the Ise-Shima area. The origin goes back about 2,000 years, and it is said that Yamato Hime-no-mikoto, who traveled as an escort of Amaterasu Omikami, the deity revered as the general deity of the Japanese people, established Kotai Jingu (Naiku) on the banks of the Isuzu River. About 500 years later, Toyouke Daijingu (Geku) enshrined the deity who governs the meals of Amaterasu Omikami.

It is customary to visit the shrines in order from Geku to Naiku. One note:please try to dress and behave in a way that does not offend the God.

Since the area from the first torii gate to the back is a clean sacred area, wash your hands at the chozuya (purification fountain) in front to purify your mind and body. Geku has left-hand traffic, and Naiku has right-hand traffic. Before passing through the torii gate, stop and bow once. When worshiping, bow twice, clap twice, bow once. After clapping, pray quietly.
