Tsurugajo Castle

Tsurugajo Castle

Tsurugajo Castle originated from Higashi Kurokawa-kan, built by Naomori Asina, and was built by Ujisato Gamo in 1593 as the first full-fledged castle keep in eastern Japan. During the Boshin War of 1868, the castle withstood a month-long onslaught by the new government forces and became known as an impregnable castle.

By 1874 all the buildings had been demolished, but the keep was rebuilt in 1965, followed by the tea house and other buildings. In 2011, the roof tiles were replaced with red tiles from the end of the Edo period, returning the castle to its typical Tsurugajo shape.
