Aomori has a wide variety of local cuisine. Major local dishes and local gourmet specialties are listed below.

  • Ichigo-ni : soup made with high-grade ingredients such as fresh sea urchin and abalone

Aomori Prefecture can be divided into three regions: Tsugaru, Nanbu, and Shimokita. Even within Aomori Prefecture, the dialects are unique in that they differ from each other: Tsugaru dialect, Nanbu dialect, and Shimokita dialect. The Tsugaru region can also be categorized into "Tosei," "Chūnan," and "Seihoku," and the Nanbu region into "Kamikita" and "Sanpaku" (Shimokita region is "Shimokita" as it is).

Out of all places in Aomori, here are our favorites: "Oirase Gorge" in the Johoku area, "Hakkoda mountain range (Mt. Oirase Gorge

Oirase Gorge

The Oirase Gorge is a river of which the source is Lake Towada, a well-known scenic spot in the north. The river is characterized by its low water flow, which makes it less prone to flooding.

The attractive feature of this area is that roadways and sidewalks are built along the mountain stream at about the same level as the stream, allowing visitors to walk while enjoying the beauty of nature. Bicycle rentals are available, so you can also ride through the wilderness on a bicycle.

It is especially beautiful during the fall foliage season, but you can enjoy it any time of the year, as each season presents a different view.

The area is fascinating for its several hot springs and for its marshland plants that can be admired. You can also view beautiful valleys and waterfalls.

If you want to experience Mount Hakkoda in a casual way, we recommend the "Walking Course," which is a stroll along a well-maintained trail. For beginners who want to try hiking, there is also the "Kenashi Paradise Line," a 2.5 to 3-hour hiking course.
